Psychiatric surveys suggest that more than half of all poets today meet, or wish to believe that they meet, the diagnostic criteria for mood disorder. Less than five percent of the non-versifying population meets this criteria. Do selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors spell the end of poetry as we know it? In some ways, let us hope so.
